WORK TOWARDS THE SUSTENANCE OF DEMOCRACY, GOVERNOR WIKE TELLS JOURNALISTS
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has called on journalists serving in the state to work towards the sustenance and improvement of democracy through accurate reportage of events.
Speaking on Monday at the Government House, Port Harcourt when he granted audience to the Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Governor Wike added that contrary to the position takenby INEC, there are no security issues in the state to warrant the non-conduct of the remaining rerun elections.
He said that members of the media in the state were quick to report the security challenges in the state, but have failed to report the improvements recorded in terms of security in the last three months.
“If what is happening in Lagos State where militants are being rooted out by the military, happens in Rivers State, it would have seen negative headlines against the state on a daily basis.
“If you report accurately, the society will move forward. Journalists are part of the challenge in our society. Your failure to let the society know the truth is part of the crisis”, he said.
The governor advised journalists to always take into consideration the efforts of government whenever they report on security issues.
He said that the Rivers State Government will partner with the Rivers State NUJ for the dissemination of information for the development of the state.
He announced the donation of Toyota Coaster Bus to the State NUJ.
Earlier, Chairman of the Rivers State NUJ, Mr Omoni Ayo-Tamuno commended the governor for his development projects across the state.
He said that the union will always partner with the Rivers State Government to enhance development.
