We Will Continue To Prioritize The Provision Of Portable Water -Akeredolu
Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has said that his administration would continue to make the provision of portable water to the nooks and crannies of the state a priority.
Akeredolu said this on Wednesday in Akure when a team from African Development Bank paid him a courtesy visit.
Governor Akeredolu who was represented by his Deputy,Mr Agboola Ajayi said since inception of his government, he had aggressively provided water for the rural dwellers through the ‘Kamomi Aketi’ rural water support project.
“As at today, over 2000 boreholes have been delivered to over 1000 rural communities across the state.
“The ‘Kamomi Aketi’ is today is a template that has been nationally and internationally embraced as a template for rural water supply across the globe.
“Government is determined to extend this trend to the urban water supply, hence the need for intervention of Africa Development Bank,” he said.
Akeredolu said the project, which was for Akure water supply, involved the rehabilitation of Owena,,Ondo Road Water Supply Scheme to enable seven local government areas have access to portable water.
He listed the local governments as, Ondo East, Ondo West,Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo,Ifedore,Akure South and Akure North,Ifedore,Akure South and Akure North.
The Commissioner for Water Resources and ,Sanitation and Hygiene, Mrs Yetunde Adeyanju, was keen to ensure provision of portable water.
Adeyanju said government could not do it alone, the reason for involving ADB.
“To us as government, the two main objectives of this water supply project that we are engaging in are: this ensure provision of basic water services both in the state capital and the entire state; and ensure financial viability of the urban water supply projects,” she said.
The Principal Water and Sanitation Engineer of ADB,Mr Tom Mugoya said the project would generate employment for different categories of people, especially graduates and artisans.
Mugoya said the bank would be depending on the usual cooperation of government and the reason to discuss how to finance the project.
