Ondo State governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has called for the restructuring of the Nigerian Police system, in the wake of the recent insecurity situations across the country, particularly in the South West.
The Governor said the Central Police Command system can no longer be effective, as various states lack the capacity to fight insecurity in their domain.
Arakunrin Akeredolu spoke at the 2019 Oka Day Celebration, held at the Palace of the Olubaka of Oka , Oba Yusuf Adegori Adeleye on Saturday.
He said the time has come to have state Police as a major step towards proper handling of the insecurity situation in the various states.
The Governor, who described the security situation in the country a serious challenge, lamented that some of those who should secure the people are now allegedly taking to raping of innocent school girls.
He charged the Senator representing Ondo North Senatorial district, Senator Ajayi Borrofice, to lead the voice for the amendment of the neccessary acts in the constitution to allow for state police.
Akeredolu said: “We must restructure the police. We can’t have a central police command. The time has come to have state police. Go and fight for this state police for us. We are ready to back you and support you. The challenges we are having is alarming.
“We have this great challenge. It’s a very serious matter. Those we put on our roads to secure us are now raping our daughters. Please, take this as a challenge and I know you can do it. “
Speaking on the infrastructural efrorts of his administration in Oka, Akeredolu said many schools have been reconstructed in the town, while the government is also making efforts to do more.
He particularly said his administration has supported farmers in no small measures by allowing them to farm without any rancour or disturbances.
He said: “What’s more important is how we allow our farmers to farm without any rancour. Before now, they send you out of the farm on yearly basis, but we have not sent anyone out of the farm. I know that farming will get its rightful place very soon. “
