Three Students from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) have been selected as members of the Nigerian contingent to the forth coming World University Games holding in Taipei, Taiwan from August 19-30, 2017. Ayodeji Akinkuowu , Agricultural Engineering , Alex Fapohunda ,Surveying and Aderemi Omolade , Forest and Wood Technology are representing the University and the nation. Akinkuowu is to participate in athletics (400m) while Fapohunda and Aderemi are taking part in Badminton and Tennis respectively.

Mr. Obe Rotimi , a coach from the University Sports Unit will accompany the athletes to the games .Already the Vice Chancellor, Professor Joseph Fuwape has approved their participation as well as generous support of the University for the athletes
An elated Omolade said she was prepared to do whatever it will take to make FUTA and Nigeria proud. She commended the Management of the University for making available the necessary facilities required to get them prepared. She also thanked the Coach for his patience and doggedness toward ensuring that they get the best training for the competition. Akinkuowu said he is going to compete for gold medal and nothing short.

He was a Gold medalist in 2013 Youth festival games and also won a Gold medal in the LAST NUGA games. He commended the effort of the Management and the relentless support of his Coach. Fapohunda on his part said he is prepared for the competition as he trains five times a week and visits the gym regularly. The athletes said they try to balance their academics and passion for the sporting activities.
The Coach, Mr. Obe Rotimi also commended the effort of the Director of Sports, Mr. Michael Ajibua and Chairman, FUTA Sports Council, Professor Olusola Agbede for their roles in ensuring that FUTA represents Nigeria Universities in Taiwan. He assured the Management that the participants will do the University and Nigeria proud.
Speaking about the facilities at FUTA both the Coach and the Athletes commended the available facilities at the University Sport Centre saying they are of high quality and one of the best in any Nigerian University.
Speaking on the choice of the athletes, the Coach said it was because of their antecedent in previous sporting activities. “The organizers in their wisdom selected athletes from Nigerian higher Institutions to represent the country at this year World University Games in Taipei, Taiwan based on their antecedent in previous games. And as God would have it, three of them were picked from FUTA. To us this is a plus because some Universities did not even have a single representation. Our hope is that those flying the nation’s flag from our University will do us proud.

We are doing our best in training them and I can assure you that they are taking to the instructions. We want to assure the University and the nation that they will deliver. We, however, covet your prayers and support for them.”
In a chat, Director, Sports Centre, Coach Michael Ajibua commended the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Fuwape for his interest in the Centre and the support of his administration towards sporting activities in FUTA. According to him, sport and sporting activities help to build a complete man. He appealed to the athletes to make FUTA and Nigeria proud by winning medals at the event.
