Owena Little League team of Akure has won the 2016 edition of District 01 tournament of the Little League International, Nigeria. The team had the total of 52runs in the tournament to emerge as the winner.
The tournament which was held in Bwari Area Council of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, from 26 to 29 May, 2016, brought together young boys and girls of ages 11 and 12 years old in baseball and softball.
Presenting the trophy to the winner, the Emir of Bwari, Alhaji Dr. Musa Ijahkoro commended the efforts of all the teams that represent different states across the country at the tournament for their peaceful conducts and the spirit of sportsmanship they imbibed. He also acknowledged the doggedness and the resilience of the winning team and their officials for a job well done.
Alhaji Ijahkoro said the tournament has opened more opportunities for young boys and girls in and around the area council to engage in baseball and softball games. According to him, he said the Little League International in Nigeria has come to stay, and this tournament will be an annual event in order to discover more talents.
While appreciating the interest of some of the audience, including parents on the field at showing interest in the game and registering their wards with the Little League International, he also gave kudos to the organizers of the tournament for a successful hosting.
