Ondo state University of Science and Technology, OSUSTECH, Okitipupa has held Student Industrial Work – Experience Scheme (SIWES )orientation programme for the third set of students of the University of Technology. The essence of the orientation programme was to adequately prepare the university undergraduates to fully maximize inherent advantages of SIWES engagement.
In the speech delivered by the university SIWES coordinator at the orientation programme, Dr. Oguntimehin noted that the SIWESS the student industrial work experience scheme – is focused on harmonizing theory with practice in real work situation in order to encourage and promote skills acquisition as well as acquaints students with skills for handling employer’s equipment and machinery. ‘’It has the expectation of enhancing the quality of learning and application of real life experience to classroom and laboratory situations,’’ Dr. Oguntimehin noted.
The SIWES director stressed that the SIWES programme would be a planned and supervised training and intervention based on stated and specific learning and career objectives, geared towards developing the occupational competences of participants. He also said the programme is mandatory for all students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria pursuing courses in pure and applied sciences, agriculture, engineering, environmental sciences, medical sciences, veterinary medicine and applied arts.
The programme was attended by principal officers of the university. The SIWES programme started in Nigeria some forty three years back.
