Wife of Ondo State Governor, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu wants corporate organizations operating in Nigeria to play significant roles in the fight against breast cancer in Nigeria as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) as she scores them far below pass mark in the fight.
Mrs Akeredolu made this assessment on Wednesday in Lagos during the press conference organized in lieu of Lagos State chapter launch of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria, BRECAN held at The Cromwell Courtyard Hotel, 29, Sobo Arobiodu Street, G.R.A. Ikeja, Lagos.
The Sunshine State First Lady who is a survivor for twenty years now became emotional as she recalled the pains and hopeless situation breast cancer patients Nigeria go through in accessing care and blamed it on government and corporate organizations operating in Nigeria.
“It breaks one’s heart when you know that there are lots of women out there, experiencing breast cancer and they are not sure whether they will make it. They have no money to access care and even when they have it, on getting to the hospital, the radiotherapy machine is not working”
“What are the Pharmaceutical Companies in Nigeria doing? They are making a hell of money here and there is nothing to show for it in terms of their corporate social responsibility as it concerns cancer care, they cannot even sponsor the production breast cancer awareness leaflets. The dysfunction state of our health system most especially when it comes to breast cancer is worrisome. The government and the corporate society have failed us totally, with a population of about 200million people, we have 7 radiotherapy machines and they are not working. So what are you tell the people? Simply, go home and die and that is unacceptable”.
Mrs Akeredolu who said she is aware of the impact corporate organizations are making in country like the United States of America charged Nigerian based cooperate bodies to borrow a live from their American counterparts.
Mrs Akeredolu the founder of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria, BRECAN revealed that BRECAN which was founded in October 1997 with a mission to eliminate breast cancer as a life threatening disease in Nigeria through public education, patient support, advocacy and research reviews her journey every five years and strategies for the next five year with a symposium.
She said there is improvement where they are now though they have not arrived at where they ought to be.
She used the medium to notify the general public of the forthcoming BRECAN 20th Anniversary and 3rd Symposium slated for 18th to 21st October 2017.
Adding her voice, the National President of BRECAN, Mrs Juliet Ogbuogu said the little seed sown by the founder twenty years ago has now germinated and multiplied into a big forest as BRECAN now has full fleshed chapters in OYO State, ONDO State and LAGOS State, with presence at SOKOTO State as NYSC Community Development Services (CDS), ENUGU State as Students Clubs, and IMO State as an upcoming Chapter and commended Lagos Chapter for their efforts so far.
Earlier in her speech, the Chapter Chairperson of BRECAN Lagos, Mrs Vivian Okorie said the press conference which focuses on “ The need for Breast Cancer awareness and advocacy in the perspective of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria, Lagos chapter” is to create the much needed awareness and advocacy that will go a long way in curbing ignorance and encourage early detection.
Mrs Okorie used the medium to invite the public of their Chapter launch coming up on the 16th of September 2017.
