As part of the activities to celebrate this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day coming up on Monday, 28th of May, 2018, the Chairman, Ondo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), Mrs Yetunde Adeyanju today embarked on sensitisation visit to some secondary schools in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
Mrs Adeyanju while addressing students in schools visited noted that the World Menstrual Hygiene Day is being celebrated all over the world on May 28 of every year to educate and train girl child and women on how to maintain their hygiene during Menstrual periods.
She said this would enable them to prevent offensive odours that could emanate from unhealthy handling of menstruation cycle which can also lead to undue stigmatisation from people around them.
She added that about 3,000 students with other selected women across the state would participate in this year’s event where they would be educated and trained on how to handle stress, pains and challenges associated with Menstrual periods as well as how to produce re-usable pads with clothing materials in order to reduce the monthly expenses on Menstrual pads.
The Chairman, who was accompanied by the General Manager and the Head of Mobilization Unit of the Agency, Engineer Rotimi Oladimeji and Mrs Oluronke Falodun commended the State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for being passionate about activities that positively affect girl child and women since his assumption of office, adding that this year’s event will hold at the State Cultural Center, Adegbemile, Akure starting with a one kilometer road walk that will kick off from Democracy Park to the event venue.
Schools visited include Fiwasaye Girls’ Grammar School, St. Louis Girls’ Grammar School, C.A.C Grammar School and Brilliant International College while the Director of Sanitation in the Agency, Mrs Funmilola Akintade visited schools outside the state capital.
The Principals and Students of all the schools visited expressed their appreciation to the State Governor for his kind gesture and pledged their readiness to participate in the global event.
