  • It was reminiscences of old memories , banters and fanfare as old students of Manuwa Memorial Grammar School, Iju Odo , Ondo southern senatorial district gathered at their alma mater to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the school. The two in one event was the Reunion of old students , followed by the Inter house athletic competition of the school.
The old students gifted their ‘ cradle of knowledge’ MMGS an ultra modern administrative complex built tastefully and well equipped with computer sets . The complex which was built in honour of the memory of the first indigenous principal of the Manuwa Memorial Grammar school, late Mr. E.O Agagu was commissioned by Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola, also an alumnus of the school.

Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the immediate past Executive Governor of the state of Osun was filled with delightful excitement as he took the audience down the memory lane in the course of his special lecture at the event. Aregbesola said he followed his Uncle, Jimi Aregbesola who was a tutor to the school and it was a pleasant experience he had in the course of his studentship. The former governor regaled his audience with the tale of his teacher, of blessed memory, whom he said he and his peers would jeer at secretly for his refusal to buy a car like his colleagues , stressing that they were too innocent to realise that the teacher who declined getting a car like his colleagues actually had his priority ordered right and owning an automobile wasn’t actually top of his priority. The song they sung to boo the ‘priority conscious’ teacher elicited laughter and excitement from his classmates and the audience.

In his lecture at the 65th anniversary and Reunion of the school titled ” the consciousness of being and the awareness of one’s essence” Ex Governor Aregbesola said his story as a successful man will not be complete without his reference to Manuwa Memorial Grammar school, which he said contributed significantly to his knowledge as a young secondary school lad.
He told the students of the school that they too can be what they want to be in life if they will be proactive enough to set an achievable life goal for themselves, noting goal setting is the first step to self actualisation.

Ogbeni Aregbesola warned that parents, teachers and government should pay attention to children of school age because these children , whether we like it or not shall later come round to take charge of the affairs of the nation , hence the need for all to ensure children of schooling age are not denied education.

He equally urges students to understand their limitations and discover their innate talents , maintaining that God has blessed every child with an innate ability and it behoves each child to discover their strength and talent and work on it.

” The trouble with not having a goal is that you can run all your life on the field and never score , yet not all goals are beneficial or desirable ,”‘ Aregbesola emphasized. He urged all young people of schooling age to discover their passion as passion links up with a person’s innate ability . He noted that it is better when one discovers oneself than for other people to help discover one’s passion.

Aregbesola therefore implore government to continue to invest massively in education , noting that the educated man is a non parasitic man who is a productive mind which is both an advantage for him and the society. He however condemned the get rich quick syndrome which he said is fast becoming a norm among Nigerian youth , stating that the youths are so corrupt that their main stay has become vices like internet fraud, pornography , bet playing and lottery, kidnapping ,armed robbery and ritual killing. He noted with regrets that youths have made themselves the end of their world view. “If your world view ends with you then you are a tragedy to humanity,” Aregbesola said.
In the words of Herbert Einstein, Ogbeni Aregbesola asked the students to take a goal if they want to live a happy life.
