LASSA CAMPAIGN: Ondo Government seeks stakeholders support

As a proactive measure to curbing the spread of Lassa fever, the state government held a stakeholders meeting at Owo.

At the meeting with relevant stakeholders, the commissioner for health, Dr. Wahaab Adegbenro tasked  stakeholders to take the fight against Lassa as a security issue that is threatening the existence of the people of the state.

Dr. Adegbenro said it is time to treat the issue of Lassa corporately  and kick it out of the state as no one could tell who will be the next.

He disclosed that as part of measures to nip the epidemic in the bud, the state is about to commence operation at the –Infections Disease Center in Akure to take care of Lassa patients.

In his words “the government is on top of the situation and would soon see the end of Lassa in the state if stakeholders cooperate and lend a helping hand in the fight”.

Various stakeholders were told what was required of them by the PHC Coordinator, Dr. Olawanle Isaac who gave a lecture on Lassa, its symptoms ,the Dos  and Don’ts

Dr. Olawanle harped on constant hand washing, personal and environmental sanitation, abstinence from unnecessary contact with the sick as man to man transmission is now higher than that transmitted by rodents.

The Executive Secretary Local Government Education Authority,Mr. Agboola Adegoroye harped on the need for Environmental Officers to stop people from pouring refuse into drainages and the need to do consistent sensitization on Lassa even after the outbreak.

The CAN Chairman Owo, Ven. Samuel Obanla asked the commissioner to issue circular to Churches and Mosques to ensure they see  Burial Clearance before conducting any burial so that they do not run foul of the law.

He also said the Owo Market should be cleared of debris to safe guard the health of the people.

The iyaloja of Owo ,Alhaja Risikat Hamed talked about the health hazard that the heap of refuse at the Owo market constitute to the people.

She appealed to the government to provide refuse disposal dump and public toilets.

The Chief Imam,League of Imams and ALFAs for the Southwest, Alhaji Sheik Ahmed Aladesawe appealed to the people to obey government and sensitize people in their locality.

The DPO Owo, Mr. Nsan Ejijor and the chairman National association of proprietors of private schools, Dr. Samuel Oyegoke toed the same line as they advocated that Lassa Campaign should be taken to schools.

The Oliyere of iyere Owo, HRM. Oba Omotunde Alaba Adako said Owo now need more attention of government because of its high prevalence rate and promised to support government in the sensitization.

The Supervisor for Works Owo local government area, Mr. Olusanya Balogun who represented the Local Government Chairman, promised to relay all that happened to the Local Government Chairman and effort will be made to keep Owo clean.

The Commissioner stopped by on the way at some Hamlets to educate the people on reason they should not sun dry Gari and enforce compliance.

He also visited the Federal Medical Center Owo, Centre. for treatment of Lassa Patients, to access the situation on ground.
