Wife of Ondo State Governor, Chief Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu wants media practitioners in Nigeria to always be Objective and fair in their practice.
Mrs Akeredolu disclosed this in a goodwill message presented at the second anniversary celebration of The Big Truth Newspaper held at the Ridge event center Onitsha road Owerri.
The Sunshine State First Lady who was represented at the event by the Special Assistant on Social Media, Rowland Onyeukwu, observed that the media occupies a strategic position conventionally recognized as the fourth estate of the realm in a every nation and urged them to take advantage of their position to contribute their own quota to the development of democracy in Nigeria.
According to her ” The media is conventionally recognized as the fourth estate of the realm. A position that gives it power and freedom to contribute meaningfully to the development of our most cherished democracy. The media is saddled with numerous responsibilities such as; Formation of attitude through establishment of values for the nation.
Protection of social justice.
Ensuring a peaceful national coexistence and progress.
Informing people about development projects and programmes.
Offering solutions to problems in the nation. I love to encourage you to stay true to them, with deep sense of objectivity and fairness.”
She also congratulated The Big Truth Newspaper for establishing an ICT centre in Owerri.
In his welcome address, the publisher of The Big Truth Newspaper, Mr Modestus Nwankpa revealed that The Big Truth Newspaper was founded in 2016 with a firm resolve to strictly adhere to the tenets of the profession which according to him is anchored on objectivity, balance reportage and to being fair to all irrespective of political leaning.
Mr Nwamkpa expressed delight that The Big Truth Newspaper has grown from an infant to an adult today in the mist of challenges and not minding the hiccups in and around the operational environment and acknowledged that their success was made possible by God and the encouragement, patronage and readership of many Nigerians.
Delivering his keynote address the former Chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalists IMO state chapter sir Fidel Onyeneke said the caliber of people gathered at the event is evident to the fact that The Big Truth Newspaper has gained acceptance of the people which implies that they are doing well and warned that they should not loose focus on professionalism and ethics of Journalism.
Traditional rulers, politicians from different political divides, students and civil society groups were among the people that graced the occasion.
