The Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, says he will do his utmost within the available resources to renovate existing primary and secondary schools in the state.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the State Executive Council of the Nigerian Union Teachers, NUT,comprising the State elected Officers and all Chairmen, Secretaries and Treasurers from the 18 Local Government branches of the NUT at the Cocoa Conference Hall of the Governor’s office, in Akure;  Governor Akeredolu said the basic level of education deserves better attention from all stakeholders.

The governor said by the time the state’s Internally Generated Revenue improves, the schools would be provided with appropriate instructional and teaching materials; make the schools’ environment conducive for knowledge acquisition; construct toilet and perimeter fences for each of the schools with provision of  boreholes.

Arakunrin Akeredolu used the opportunity of the visit to appeal the teachers in the state to be patient with the State Government as the economy will hopefully get out of recession soon.

“The economy will improve soon by  God’s Grace. Just be patient as we are working hard to make our Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, better” , the governor said.

On fresh employment of teachers to fill vacancies in the 1,236 Primary Schools across the state, Governor Akeredolu said the financial implications of every request would be carefully considered before approvals are given.

“Much as we need to employ teachers and other civil servants, we must be careful.

“We are considering taking  people from other areas in the Civil Service, train them and move them into our schools as  teachers,” the governor declared.

Earlier, Mr Victor Amoko, Chairman, NUT, Ondo State, said they were fully prepared to partner with the present administration to translate dreams and aspirations into reality as far as education of Ondo State children was concerned.

“Since assumption of office, you have not minced words on your resolute determination to offer qualitative education to all children of school age in view of colossal significance of education in advancing the cause of humanity.

“This is in consonance with the universally held assertion that education is the most potent tool ever devised by man for his advancement.

“I urge you to sustain and improve upon the good legacies of the immediate past administration in the educational sector and marry them with your innovative and pragmatic ideas towards regaining the lost glory of our sunshine State in education,” he said.

The Chairman also enumerated some issues requiring urgent attention of government in the education sector in the state to include management and funding of primary education in Nigeria; convening an education summit; payment of running grants; and renovation of schools/provision of furniture and instructional materials.

Top government functionaries who joined the Governor to receive the NUT officers include, the Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde;  Head of Service, Mr Oluwatoyin Akinkuotu and the Chief of Staff to the Governor,  Chief Olugbenga Ale.
