Fashola Pays Working Visit to Ondo Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu
Mr Babatunde Fashola, SAN, the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, on Thursday, said the responsibility of the FG was to support, enable and assist every state fulfill its developmental, cultural, economic, and social objectives.
Fashola made this known during a courtesy call to the Ondo State Governors office in Akure.
He said the FG had no agenda to compete with any state, only to enable and assist them fulfill the objectives within the framework of the Nigerian constitution.
“We seek to connect states, hence the responsibility of Federal highways, so we will continue work on Benin-Ore-Ofosu-Ajebandele highway which will help interconnect Ondo with Edo and Ogun States, and access to other parts of southwest.
“We also concluded plans to intervene in the Ado Ekiti-Ilene-Akure highway so that you can connect with Ekiti State, and also any other thing we can do to assist on roads, please escalate to us.
“For power, your state hosts Omotosho Power plant which has been challenged by sufficiency of gas to fully optimize all of its capacity and we are working to increase supply of gas.
“Addressing the liquidity problems yesterday, the FEC approved a power sector recovery program which addresses end to end liquidity issues, transmission, investment, governance, metering issues and so on,” he said.
Fashola also thanked Ondo state for providing land for the housing projects, which he said, was a way the FG was helping to create employment through housing schemes and relieve the burden on states.
The Minister further said they were in receipt of claims from states, including Ondo, about refunds on investments made on federal roads.
“A lot has already been done. We verified and sent the results of verification to the Bureau of Public Procurement to advice us on quantities and final pricing which will form the basis on what FG will agree to pay.
“Mr president has already announced plans to raise a board, an instrument through which all this will be financed and so we are optimistic that it will be settled this year if not concluded,” he said.
Responding, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, the Ondo State Governor, appreciated the FG on work done since the Minister resumed office.
“We are proud of what your and FG are doing in terms of expenses and decisions to make sure we have budgets that address infrastructural deficits we all face in this country which Ondo State has its own share.
Akeredolu praised the Minister for the new type of roads using cement as base.
“We wish that you make Ipele-Isua road a dual carriage way to Abuja because it is important for economic activities and so many people come through this route from Lagos.
Ondo to Benin is also important and the ripple effects can only be imagined while Akoko-Abuja road has a sharp bend which claims lives.
“We have begged the FG to come to our aid over and over, maybe we tunnel it or have an alternate route.
“The Omotosho Power plant is also an issue, its also quite near to the south senatorial district has had no light for almost 4 years due to debt issues claimed by the discos,” he said.
