Prof. Yemisi Adeparusi of Federal University of Technology, Akure( FUTA) has urged secondary school students to choose their academic careers based on their potentials and not as a means of showing pride.

Adeparusi, who teaches in Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, said this on Thursday in Akure  while giving a career talk in an occasion of alumni reception for, Prof. Adeola Fuwape, the new Vice Chancellor of FUTA.

” You must not choose a career for the pride or arrogance but for purpose of your potentials.

“There is no study course that is inferior to another. That is why you must have purpose which will be your driving force,” she said.

The don enjoined the students to be skilled and engage vocational work alongside with their academic pursuit, saying that everyone has innate gift to work upon.

According to her, one may not even make use of one’s academic certificate but on talents.

Adeparusi added that Nigeria is a blessed country, though with governance challenges, that must have everyone’s positive contributions for its full manifestation of its potentiality.

Earlier, Dr Adeola Oladele, the Chairman of FUTA Alumni Association, Ondo State chapter, said the talk was part of programme meant to welcome the new vice chancellor of the institution.

” This programme was conceived sometimes ago to always welcome any new vice chancellor of FUTA and it is geared towards sensitising and orientating students of secondary school on their careers and likely things to come across in higher institutions,” he said.

In his short lecture on effects of cultism, Dr Michael Popoola, said that there was nothing good in cultism but a mere sign of destruction.

Popoola added that the students should not toy with freedom that they would have when gained admission to higher institutions.
