A call has been made for support of crowd-funding initiative of Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the wife of Ondo State governor to fight the scourge of breast cancer.
A cancer consultant, Dr Katung Abba, made the call on Thursday during a press conference put together by BRECAN at the Ijapo office in Akure where cancer survivors shared their experiences and how help came through BRECAN’s crowd funding.
Abba said an individual could not win the war, hence the need for collaborative efforts by being part of the crowd funding initiative of the governor’s wife.
He noted that proper care for cancer was very expensive adding that the wife of the governor was contributing immensely to the fight against breast cancer.
The consultant stressed the need for government to subsidize the treatment which takes about N1.2million, showed concern at a situation where cancer care is not even included in the National Health Insurance Scheme of the federal government.
In her own remark, Dr Mrs Toyin Ayimoro, the Ondo State Chairperson of BRECAN enjoined everybody to key into the initiative as a way of giving back to the society.
Dr. Ayimoro who noted that in the cause of BRECAN’s sensitization programmes, it discovered that a lot of women are living with cancer, called for supports and financial aids to sustain the initiative so that more women who are awaiting help can access funds from the programme.
While also calling on other women who are afraid to come out to do so in order to get help, she called on individuals and corporate bodies to key into the programme in order to save more lives.
At the moment, about 40 women with breast cancer have applied for financial help to aid their treatment”, she added just as lauded Mrs. Akeredolu for helping many cancer victims to stay alive by funding their treatment.
No fewer than 10 women have survived the scourge of cancer through the crowdfunding initiative of the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria, BRECAN.
One of them, Mrs Oye Temitope, a 41 year old said she was weighed down when she discovered that she had breast cancer but succour came when she was introduced to BRECAN.
“I have never met the founder of this organisation, but she attended to my case. Today, i am a breast cancer survivor.”, she added just as she thanked Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the team of Doctors and other BRECAN members for saving her life.
Also addressing news men, another survivor, Mrs Grace Dolapo Meroyi who spoke in an emotion laden voice said she innocently walked into the BRECAN office here in Akure and met Mrs Okafor who attended to her.
“Within 20 days, my letter got to her Excellency who I have never met, a significant amount of money was released and surgical operations was carried out.”, she added while also thanking the wife of the Governor for making it possible for her to become cancer free.
Another breast cancer patient, Mrs. Grace Lasisi who is optimistic of getting help through the crowd-funding, urged the people to contribute towards crowdfunding so as to save more lives.
It would be recalled that the initiator of the organisation and Wife of Ondo state Governor, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu launched the crowd funding in September, 2017 to raise fund for the care of breast cancer patients in Ondo State.
