Senator representing Ondo South at the red chamber, Senator Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, CFR on Thursday presented a bill requesting for the establishment of Bitumen Development Commission by the Federal Government.
He wants the commission established so that the exploration of the bitumen deposit in Agbabu in Ondo South Senatorial District will commence.
The bill, which is passing through first reading on the floor of the Senate, will mark the foundation for the exploration of the natural deposit that has been left untapped since it was discovered many years ago.
Successive governments both at the Federal and state levels have been promising to kick start the exploration of the bitumen, which has been described as the second largest after Canada’s.
If Senator Ibrahim sails through with the bill, the nation’s economy will no longer rely solely on crude oil.
