Betty Anyanwu – Akeredolu, the mother in Israel
BY PRINCE DAPO ADEPOJU SAM
Bible says “He who finds a wife has found a good thing, and he shall obtain favour from the Lord.” How the then young Rotimi Akeredolu was able to get married to the lady from Owerri in IMO State at a time when the issue of ethnic discrimination is likely to be on the rise still baffles me! God definately knew about it and allowed everything sailed smoothly.
Betty, as an undergraduate of the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka would have been a star in which many suitors will be willing to have due to her level of exposure and education at that time but the Owo man was the luckiest amongst them all.
I knew she must have gone against all odds to choose the handsome “Yoroba boy” in an igbo environment.
Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the mother of four who is also an aquaculturist and philanthropist is guiding her home jealously, taking good care of her husband and the children – I suspect a secret war room where she prays to God on behalf of the children and her husband.
As a virtuous woman, she stood by her husband and saw him rose to the pinnacle of his career in the law profession! Akeredolu did not only become the NBA president but he was the first to serve two terms in office since the creation of the noble association. The Akeredolu family always relate/ impact on the lives of people around them not minding their background. All these have come to play in Ondo State since her husband was sworn in as the sixth democratically elected governor of Ondo State.
Arabinrin, as she’s fondly called has been so supportive to the administration of her darling husband. She has come up with various programmes that have impacted positively on women and youths in Ondo State such as; FOWOSO, BEMORE, BRECAN, summer tennis camp and lots more. She is also using the Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu foundation to facilitate developmental projects to some remote communities in Ondo State.
Lot of success stories has been recorded and it’s so clear that she is the most hardworking first lady Ondo state ever had since the return to democratic rule in 1999. Like the biblical Esther, she is able to manage her family and also go through a lot to ensure women and youths are not left out in the scheme of things.
Her inspiring activities earned her international recognition. Infact, she was a guest speaker at Harvard, the most celebrated university in the world recently on the issue of breast cancer. The discourse was mainly to find a lasting solution to the scourge. Betty Anyanwu- Akeredolu is bold, extremely brilliant, very frank, full of passion for the down throdden, disciplinarian, Good listener, above all the successful fish farmer is God fearing.
Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu was born on 20 July, 1953, to the family of Chief BUB and Nneoma Dora Anyanwu, in Emeabiam, Owerri-West, in Imo State. Chief Mrs Anyanwu-Akeredolu attended the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where she obtained a bachelor of science degree in zoology in 1977. She holds a master of science degree in fisheries, major in aquaculture, from the University of the Philippines Visayas in Iloilo City.
She began her career as a fisheries expert while working with the Federal Department of Fisheries. She retired in 2005. She is a commercial fish farmer and provides consultancy services through her firm, Aquatek Farms Ventures.
In 1997, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent treatment and survived. She started the nonprofit organization, Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) to raise awareness of the disease.
She has won awards in recognition of her work and commitment in the fight against breast cancer in Nigeria.
Ondo State is so lucky to have her as First Lady at this point in time.
