Tributes have been delivered in torrents in honour of the late military governor of the defunct Western Region and Western State Major General Robert Adeyinka Adebayo at his the Lying-in- State at the Parliament Building, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The ceremony organised by governments of Ekiti,Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo states was attended by several dignitaries across the country to pay their last respect to a man regarded as a topflight professional, an administrator, a mentor and  an advocate of peaceful coexistence for Nigerians.

Among very important personalities who attended the ceremony were, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, present governors of the states that make up the South West Nigeria: Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, Lagos State; Senator Abiola Ajimobi, Oyo State; Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu( SAN),Ondo State; Senator Ibikunle Amosun(CON), Ogun State;  ( represented by his Deputy- Governor; Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Osun State and Dr. Peter Ayodele Fayose, Ekiti State,(represented by his Deputy).

Others include: past governors of Western State, Oyo and Ondo States; current Deputy Governors of Oyo and Osun States; some members of the National Assembly; some states’ lawmakers; serving and retired military top brass; members of Yoruba Council of Elders, top notch politicians from the South West States and beyond; the widow, children and family members of the late general.

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu , SAN, in a condolence message described the late general as an “iconic personality” whose “sterling career, both professional and political, spanned several decades”.

Arakunrin Akeredolu noted that “General Adeyinka Adebayo did not excite suspicion concerning his credentials as a patriot at the most crucial moment in the life of a nascent republic. He displayed rare courage and humility at a time when our country faced her most challenging moments.”

Governor Akeredolu added with pride that the late General Adebayo “placed service to his fatherland above mundane and personal preferences.”

In his tribute, Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki used the opportunity to commend the coming together of the six states in Southwest Nigeria to “celebrate the exit of a fine soldier and administrator” .

Senator Saraki described General Adebayo as great Nigerian who stood firmly to defend the unity of Nigeria “when the unity as threatened” .

Highpoint of the event include cultural tribute and a documentary on the life and times of Major  General Robert Adeyinka Adedayo who was born in 1928 in Iyin, Ekiti State and survived by his wife Mrs Modupe Adebayo, children including the former governor of Ekiti, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, and many grand children.

Ondo State delegation to the event led by the governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, included the Secretary to the State Government, ( who represented the state in the Planing Committee), Hon Ifedayo Abegunde; Deputy State Chairman of APC, Engineer Ade Adetimehin; Chief of Staff to the State Governor, Chief Olugbenga Ale; Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties and Strategy, Dr. Doyin Odebowale and high ranking APC leaders and exco members in the state.
