N100m JI’s Scholars’ Initiative: The Reality Of A Generational Promise

~ Ogungbemi Adeyemi Orimisan

What seemed like a rhetorical narrative yesterday, November 15th, snowballed into the unquenchable flame of reality with the news spreading across Ondo South and beyond.

For decades, many in Ondo South Senatorial District dismissed the idea that politicians could deliver on grand promises, especially in education. Critics called them smearing fiction and rhetorical flourishes that are meant only to impress. Yet, in 2025, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, CFR, Ivy League graduate of Harvard, Cambridge, and Oxford, holder of nine degrees which includes three Ph.Ds in Business, War Studies, and Public Policy proved that true leadership can turn skepticism into reality.

Senator Ibrahim’s commitment to education dates back to the 1990s, when he began awarding scholarships to deserving students across Ondo State. Among those early beneficiaries is an eminent APC stalwart and Professor of Medicine, who publicly acknowledged how these interventions changed his trajectory. These early acts established the foundation for a decades-long legacy of human capital development, guided by both intellect and compassion.

In November 2001, Senator Ibrahim, through the Jimoh Ibrahim Education Foundation (JIEF), awarded ₦10,000 scholarships to hundreds of students across Ondo State. One of those beneficiaries was Mr. Akingbemi Tunde, whose life was profoundly impacted by the opportunity. Twenty-four years later, his daughter, Ms. Akingbemi Adeola Esther, a 300-level Nursing student at Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, became a recipient of the 2025 bursary, demonstrating a remarkable continuity of impact.

In a heartfelt message, Mr. Tunde reflected on the generational blessing thus:
“Dear Distinguished Senator,
In November 2001, I was privileged to receive ten thousand naira (#10,000) scholarship from Jimoh Ibrahim’s Education Foundation (JIEF), an NGO you registered to assist one thousand Ondo State Students for over five years.
Today, I am a living ambassador of JIEF.
As God will have it, my daughter will also stand before you tomorrow to receive a whooping sum of one hundred thousand naira scholarship from you after twenty-four years I stood before you for that kind gesture.
On behalf of my family, I sincerely appreciate you for giving hope to the hopeless.
May the good Lord give you good and robust health.
From Akingbemi Tunde.”

This moment completes a generational circle of educational upliftment with a father and daughter, beneficiaries twenty-four years apart, tied by a single legacy of impact. It is a story that illustrates how sustained commitment to education can transcend generations, nurture talent, and transform lives.

The 2025 bursary, totaling ₦100 million for 1,000 undergraduate students, was distributed transparently across all six local government areas of Ondo South. At a time of rising tuition, economic hardship, and shrinking opportunities, the initiative became a Golden Fleece, providing hope, stability, and opportunity to families across Okitipupa, Irele, Ilaje, Ese-Odo, Odigbo, Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo and beyond.

Skeptics were proved wrong. Evidently, tens of children of those who had publicly labeled Senator Ibrahim an “unrewarding leader” with cosmetic promises were among the confirmed beneficiaries. Before the initiative, these same self-ordained ‘Thomases’ had been vocal: “Nobody gives such support here,” they said. “It’s political fiction. We’ve heard this kind of promise before.” Yet the bursary proved them wrong. The confirmed inclusion of their children, cronies and family members highlight a rare blend of fairness, sportsmanship, and commitment to the welfare of all constituents. The initiative demonstrated that true leadership is neither selective nor vindictive; it is consistent, compassionate, and visionary. This is a quiet but powerful affirmation that leadership is guided by integrity and foresight serves all, not just the politically aligned.

This act of generosity is emblematic of Senator Ibrahim’s vision: a billionaire business magnate, global investor, Ivy League scholar, and legislator whose influence is measured not by rhetoric but by the lives he transforms.

Beyond the figures: ₦100,000 per student, the real impact is generational. The JI’s Scholars initiative demonstrates that education, when nurtured with commitment and vision, transcends time. What was once dismissed as impossible smearing fiction is now a tangible reality, a testament to the enduring power of leadership that blends intellect, philanthropy, and strategic foresight.

Senator Ibrahim, a Doctor of Business and War Studies, has repeatedly emphasized that education is the most sustainable ladder for social mobility and community transformation. From his early scholarships in the 1990s to the 2025 ₦100 million bursary, he has built a transgenerational legacy that equips young people to shape their future and the destiny of Ondo South.

For the district, this is more than a bursary. It is renaissance, renewal, and revival; one student at a time. It is proof that promises, when coupled with vision, courage, and integrity, can indeed become a golden reality.

JI’s Scholars: From Smearing Fiction to Reality; A Promise Fulfilled With the Golden Fleece is more than a slogan. It’s yet another story of hope restored, dreams renewed, and leadership that endures beyond generations. It is a living testament to a legacy that endures beyond rhetoric, beyond politics, and beyond generations. Ondo South has not only received financial support; it has inherited a story of hope, opportunity, and transformative leadership that time will not erase.
