The wife of Ondo State Governor and the founder of the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria ( BRECAN), Mrs. Betty Anyanwu- Akeredolu has called on Nigerians to provide support within their individual capacities saying everybody has a role to play in supporting humanity.
Mrs. Akeredolu while answering questions from journalist shortly after the 2019 Jog4 Life train stopped over at the Democracy Park, Akure said it is not until a person acquires huge finances like Dangote or Otedola that he or she can impact the life of another.
According to her, Nigerians need to wake up and become their brothers’ keeper by doing and giving whatever they can within their capacities to support humanitarian services saying both the poor and the rich can fall victim and as such, it is everybody’s responsibility to bring succour and hope to those who have fallen victims to the deadly scourge of cancer.
On the essence of the programme, Mrs. Akeredolu said Jog4Life is an annual event organized by BRECAN to galvanize action against the disease through public awareness and support for victims and as well a time to showcase survivors as a way of giving hope to others who are victims or those who would become victims in the future.
Mrs. Akeredolu who observed that breast cancer has largely been killing women as a result of ignorance, urged women to seek help at the hospital as breast cancer is not a spiritual attack.
While also restating the need for women to present early at the hospital, Mrs. Akeredolu affirmed that more women are coming out to seek help and as such more lives are being saved.
In a chat with newsmen, the lead jogger, Mrs Margaret Akinsuroju, Chairman Odigbo Local Government Area said breast cancer is no longer a death sentence as more women are surviving the scourge of cancer as a result of having the right information.
While also charging women on the need to do regular Breast Self Examination, Mrs. Akinsuroju task women to report to the hospital if they notice any changes or discharge.
The event also gave the leader of Team Survival Nigeria, (TSN); made up of survivors of Breast Cancer, Mrs. Funmilayo Oluwagbamila the opportunity to share her experience just as she affirmed thatthey were out to put their faces to the campaign as a way to encourage more women to come out and get helped.
Other major highlights of the event was the presentation of award by a foundation to Mrs. Akeredolu, the practical demonstration of breast check with Sekem dance among others.
