The Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria, BRECAN, kicks-off its annual Jog For Life exercise aiming at sensitising the populace on the need to prevent cancer disease through early detection.
The 2019 edition, which started in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, featured mass jogging from Oyo State Secretariat Agodi roundabout and terminated at Emmanuel College, University of Ibadan.
BRECAN founder and wife of the Ondo State Governor, Arabinrin Betty-Anyanwu Akeredolu emphasised the need to make breast cancer a national health priority and for individuals to support the cause by creating awareness.
Arabinrin Akeredolu stated affirmatively that the disease doesn’t kill, if detected early, hence the reason BRECAN has deemed it fit to come up with Jog for Life initiative in order to allay the fear of women about it and encourage them on Breast Self-Examination and the need to visit hospital as soon as they detect any abnormalities in their breasts.
According to her, Breast cancer is not a spiritual attack and women need not allow it to deteriorate before visiting the hospital by wasting time searching for spiritual cure.
She said: “ Jog for Life started in 2002 to create awareness on breast cancer; it’s awareness was unacceptably low and people are dying of this disease not knowing that it is curable.
“We are also using this event to show survivorship that breast cancer is not a death sentence, and show the face of those who have gone through this experience and are now doing fine.
“ It’s also to use the occasion to raise funds by buying the t-shirt which is the least an individual can do to support the cause because many atimes the victims are aware that they should visit the hospital but they don’t have the money and they will run to BRECAN for assistance. It’s also an avenue to keep fit”.
The lead jogger who is the queen of the Olubaka of Oka land in Akoko area of Ondo State, Olori Olajumoke Adeleye, implored women to always do self examination of their breasts, noting that early detection saves lives.
BRECAN Chairperson in Oyo State, Mrs. Tolu Taiwo noted that the association has recorded huge success on Breast cancer awareness, adding that so many cases of the disease have been attended to since its inception.
She however lamented the challenge faced by the association in terms of funding, and enjoined individuals to support the mission of BRECAN being a citizen-driven organisation without any government’s support.
The event also featured health talk by a Dietician from the department of nutrition and dietetics, UCH, Ibadan, Miss Grace Okah, on how to prevent and manage breast cancer by eating healthy.
She advised individuals to eat a serve of fruits and vegetables daily, reduce alcohol consumption, and eat only red meat that has not been roasted, baked, or fried.
The event also featured inauguration of BRECAN Oyo new executives, recognition of individuals who have supported the initiative, and raffle draw exercise.
