The Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, on Wednesday called on stakeholders in the health sector to prioritize the provision of essential services to the Nigerian populace by playing down pettiness.
The Governor said no professional can be at his or her best in a rancorous atmosphere and even members of the public cannot get the best from such deplorable arrangement.
He stated this in his keynote address delivered at the opening ceremony of the Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting of Resident Doctors, held at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, [OAUTH], Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Akeredolu, represented by his Deputy, Hon. Agboola Ajayi stressed that the effective practice of medicine is sustained on a tripod, which he said is medicine, public policy and government.
According to him, “medicine as a profession is very important in any society. Advancement in the knowledge of the science of treatment and its application to make the sick whole determines, to a great extent, the quality of the conditions of the people in any given society.
“Practitioners must update their knowledge to enhance their expertise. They must adhere, strictly, to their professional oaths, at all times”.
On public policy, Akeredolu said “the lack of sound and clear policies has had destructive impact on any sector. The sensitive nature of the health sector makes it more compelling for the government and other stakeholders to get it right.
“Politics must not override good reasoning at all times. The attitude, which predisposes government functionaries to being evasive and sometimes unreasonable in the face of daunting challenges of existence, will affect the sector negatively”.
On governance, the governor said “ ability of those saddled with the responsibility of ensuring that policies are implemented to the letter to act courageously, honestly and consistently will, to a very great extent, go a long way in achieving the purpose for which there is a government in the first place.
“Providing adequate funding for successful implementation of any policy is also very important. But you will all agree with me that the government, oftentimes, is limited, severely, due to paucity of funds. The need to manage scarce resources have created many crises in virtually all sectors of the country. The government must, therefore ensure effective deployment of scarce resources to meet the desired end”.
