Wife of Ondo state Governor, Arabinrin Betty Akeredolu, yesterday performed the foundation laying ceremony of a neighbourhood market named after her at Ifedayo Community, Ijigba 2, Off Oda Road, Akure , in Akure South Local Government Area of the state.
The First Lady specially commended the Caretaker Chairman of Akure South Local Government Area, Comrade Margaret Atere for her good initiative with a promise that she would continue to give women the necessary attention through her various women centred projects and programmes.
While performing the foundation laying ceremony, Betty Akeredolu noted that the market when completed would provide a safe and conducive environment for women to trade in the community, adding that it would be unsafe for women to market their products on the streets..
“We cannot afford to have our women trading under sun and on the road. We must provide a safe and conducive place for them. This will protect them against accident,”she said.
She expressed happiness that the neighbourhood market was being named after her, saying that she would continue to go for the best things that would improve the lives of women in the state.
The Governor’s wife also prayed for better gains for the market women in the community.
Earlier, the Caretaker Chairman, Akure South Local Government Area, Comrade Margaret Atere, explained that a good number of women who are traders are being faced with numerous challenges in marketing their products as many of them do trade at the heart of the road, thereby endangering their lives and that of their children.
According to her, the management of the local government initiated the neighbourhood market to alleviate the suffering of women and improve their lives.
Comrade Atere said the market was named after the First Lady to appreciate her for her unquantifiable love and care for women and children, pointing out that the wife of the Governor has impacted positively on the lives of women and children through her various programmes and projects.
“Our health and that of our children is very paramount to you. Your crusade against Breast Cancer is monumental and internationally acclaimed.
The market will be called ” Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu Neighbourhood Market”.
The council boss also appealed to the wife of the governor to consider granting cash empowerment to the market women to further facilitate and enlarge their trading activities.
She listed some of her achievements in the council area to include, prompt and continuous assistance to a widow with triplet, assistance to the victims of rainstorm at Gaga, Akure, repair of comatose grader, clearing of road verges, filling of several potholes on some identified areas in Akure as well as organisation of Summer coaching for youths in Akure.
Comrade Atere promised that her administration would continue to complement the efforts of the state government aimed at improving grassroots development and ensuring better lives for the people.
The Caretaker Chairmen of Owo and Akure North Local Government Areas, Gani Omaluka and Prince Segun Oluyede respectively, commended the First Lady and the Akure South Council boss for the project, describing it as another dividend of democracy to the people in the community.
Also, the Olu of Ijigba, Luyi Rotimi and the Chairman, Ifedayo Community, Alhaji Ali Adeyemi
lauded the Governor’s wife and the council chairman for remembering the community under the present government.
Highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of gift to the wife of the Governor by Ifedayo Community.
